Doctoral Programmes in Various Faculties

Ph.D. Programme in the Faculty of Sciences
Jain University encourages research in Pure and Applied Sciences in contemporary areas of interest, research studies linked to research problems in industry, inter-disciplinary research and research in emerging areas. The research is undertaken by full time faculty attached to various Departments and Centres of the University, as well as research scholars enrolled with the University. The extensive facilities created in the University are put to maximum use. Where needed, scholars permitted to use exclusive facilities available with Institutions like the Indian Institute of Science, Indian Institute of Management, National Aeronautical Laboratory, Institute of Astrophysics etc. Scholars are challenged to take up research in innovative areas, which impact human life and also to contribute to existing body of knowledge.
A number of projects are funded by Government and Private sector entities.
Research interests of the University are currently in the following areas. Jain University constantly seeks to evolve new lines of research inquiry with a view to contributing significantly to the body of scientific knowledge in pure and applied sciences.

The Ph.D. Programme in Pure and Applied Sciences is offered by the following Departments/Centres of the University:
Biochemistry, Bioinfomatics, Biophysics, Botany, Biotechnology, Zoology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Psychology, Computer Science & Information Technology, Electronicsand Forensic Science. 

Ph.D. Programme in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology
The Research and Development focus of Jain University in the fields of Engineering Science and Technology is on areas related to current needs of industry sectors and verticals, emerging areas, cross-disciplinary research studies and innovative themes. Industry sectors and verticals include Information Technology, Material Science, Energy, Nano-technology related to environment, Chemical Engineering and Material Science. The research is undertaken by full time faculty attached to various Departments and Centres of the University, as well as research scholars enrolled with the University. Ph.D. Programme in the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences and Faculty of Languages
Research is pursued in the faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences and Languages with the firm belief that humanities contributes significantly towards shaping the future and towards enhancing cultural memory. They help to mediate between cultures; they reflect and offer guidance on human values essential for the orderly development of society. The ability of the humanities to discover commonalities in diversity is very important in today’s world considering the manifold opinions and viewpoints which exist. The humanities are - more than any other research area – characterized by a plurality of methods and a broad spectrum of disciplines and research objectives.

The Ph.D. Programmes in Faculties of Humanities & Social Sciences and Languages are offered by the following Departments / Centres of the University:
History, Music, Dance, Mass Communication, Visual Arts, Economics, Kannada, Cultural Studies, Political Science, Public Administration / Public Governance and the Centre for Research in Social Science and Education.

Ph.D. Programmes in the Faculties of Commerce and Management
The Ph.D. programmes in Commerce and Management are offered by the Faculties of Management and Commerce and the Chenraj Roychand Centre for Entrepreneurship (CRCE), Jain University.
Research in Commerce and Management focuses on emerging trends, paradigms and business practices. Research initiatives of the University are currently in Retail Marketing, Microfinance and Entrepreneurship. The university is always open to scholars pursuing research on other emerging themes.

Ph.D. Programme in Inter-disciplinary Areas        
Scholars’ registering for Ph.D. Programmes at Jain University are encouraged to pursue research studies cutting across Faculties / disciplines e.g. Engineering and Management or even across departments within the same faculty e.g. Biosciences and Information Technology.

Eligibility

• Candidate should hold a Master’s Degree (from a recognised university) in the relevant subject with a minimum of 55% (In the case of SC / ST candidates there will be a relaxation of 5%). Selection will be through an Entrance Test and Interview
• Candidates who have passed UGC / CSIR / Fellowship holders shall be exempted from the Written Test; but they will need to take up the Interview.
• Candidates who are qualified for CA or ACS or ICWA with basic degree are also eligible to register for Ph.D. in this category
• Candidates who have qualified for Masters Degree prior to 1990-91 with no less than 50% marks are also eligible to register for Ph.D. programme
• M.Phil. degree holders will get a waiver for part of the course work of Ph.D. programme
• Candidates sponsored by organizations are also eligible to apply subject to their fulfillment of the above mentioned qualifications
• Candidates who hold a Masters Degree viz., M.Tech / M.Sc (Engineering) in Civil, Mechanical, Aerospace or Aeronautical Engineering (Structural or Associated disciplines) are eligible for the Ph.D. (Aerospace Engineering) Programme.

Scholarships

A few research scholarship are available for selected meritorious candidates who are not currently employed and are willing to take up a Research / Teaching Assistantship.

Duration of the Programme

Terms & Programme Content

Pre Ph.D. Course work
Candidates admitted into the Ph.D. programme are required to complete pre Ph.D. course work comprising two terms over a total duration of one year.

The first two semesters (first year) of the PhD programme is devoted to course work. Successful completion of course work would confirm the registration. Two years after successful completion of course work, the student is eligible to submit the thesis.
Evaluation of Pre Ph.D.

Candidates will be awarded a pass in Pre Ph.D. Course upon:

• Securing an aggregate of 50% marks in the term end exams, and a minimum of 40% marks in each subject
• Award of pass grade by the Guide and Co-Guide for the Literature Review and Synopsis
Seminar

On successful completion of the Pre Ph.D. programme, an open Seminar shall be presented by the Research Scholar wherein he is expected to defend the research proposal. The Seminar shall be presented before an Evaluation Committee consisting of 3 experts, of which at least one shall be from Jain University in addition to the Guides. The Committee will recommend the suitability of the candidate for registration into the Ph.D. programme.
Registration to Ph.D. Programme

Final Registration of candidates into Ph.D. programme will be based on:

• Successful completion of Pre Ph.D. programme
• Recommendation of the Evaluation Committee
• Approval of the Ph.D. Registration Committee

Note:

Prior to registration, the student should furnish original certificates / documents and credentials that will be prescribed by JU from time to time.
Progress Report

The Scholar should submit the progress report in the prescribed format to the Guide for his / her approval every 6 months. Non submission of two consecutive reports will result in cancellation of registration.
Work in Progress Seminar

The Scholar will be required to participate in an open seminar once in 6 months as per the Calendar notified by the University, wherein he shall present the progress made by him/her in his/her chosen area of Research.

• The candidate should submit his / her application to the University, in the prescribed form with a DD of 1000/- INR in the favour of Jain University, payable at Bangalore, along with other necessary documents; viz., degree certificate, marks cards and such other documents prescribed along with receipt for having paid the prescribed fee. In case of employed candidates, no objection / deputation certificate from the employer, for pursuing research is necessary.

• The candidate should submit two copies of the synopsis of the proposed research along with his / her application
• Eligible candidates will be required to take up a Pre Ph.D. Entrance examination comprising an Aptitude Test, a Subject Paper and an Interview
• Candidates who have passed UGC / CSIR / Fellowship holders shall be exempted from the Written Test; but they will need to take up the Interview.
• Reservations for SC, ST and other candidates shall be as per the guidelines of the Government of India
Career Opportunities

Holding a recognised Ph.D. degree can aid access to greater employment opportunities as potential employers will be familiar with your academic qualification. Career options include, for example, within academia (University lecturer), industry (development researcher) and the public sector (consultant).
Important Dates

Next round of Ph.D. admissions will be in August 2015. Notification for same will be issued on 1 June 2015.
